Fuel...

Not really a scientific evaluation but it does point to the fact that larger capacity cars have longer range than smaller cars with same amount of fuel in the tank. Full tank, 101.o km done and it can go another 680 km at an average of 110 - 140 km/h. Of course, if I were to step on it then it really guzzles it up.

Digital Cordless Phone

Cost about RM300, works but annoying especially the mushy buttons and dodgy speakers. Not the easiest or intuitive to use. Should have gone for Panasonic instead.

Not recommended.

Bluetooth Mouse - Logitech vs Microsoft.

As mentioned in my previous post, I have been intending to do this for quite some time. A comparison between the Logitech V270 and Microsoft 8000 blue tooth mouse. These were used with both a Sony Vaio SZ and TX series notebook. Amazingly, the Logitech paired with both notebooks without a fuss while the Microsoft - the one who also makes the operating system - requires some blue tooth stacks to be downloaded and installed. Weird.

Once paired, they both worked flawlessly until you use the blue tooth to transfer files to another notebook or PC. Then it goes haywire, while the transfer is in progress. Once completed it will be fine again.

The Logitech is a tad bigger with clean designs which I favour. It works great and is comfortable to use. The ratcheted scroll wheel is great and affords greater control when scrolling. It uses AA batteries.

The underside is plain with only the glow of the red sensor light to indicate that its alive. The Logitech is supplied with a zippered neoprene case. Nice and simple.

The Microsoft and its fancy acrylic case which also houses the blue tooth dongle. BTW, the Logitech does not come with a blue tooth dongle. Too bad for those without blue tooth built in, either lose a USB port or deal with wires.... It uses AAA batteries.

There are three extra buttons, am not sure about the ones on the side but the one in the middle, above the scroll wheel is to toggle between mouse mode and presenter mode. This is to activate all the presenter buttons and stop the mouse sensor.

My least liked feature is the smooth scrolling scroll wheel. Too smooth that its hard to have precise control.

The busy underside of the Microsoft with the controls for Microsoft PowerPoint, laser pointer and volume. Works great during presentation. No glow of light to indicate if its alive, press the laser pointer button if you need to know. Just don't point it to your eyes...

Both are great devices for their purpose. Personally, I find that I gravitate more towards the Logitech for daily use most likely due to its larger size hence more comfortable to hold and its ratcheted scroll wheel.

Logitech = RM 279.00
Microsoft = RM 429.00

Both highly recommended.

Motorola Razr v8 & W220.

For the past decade or so, since I discovered the Palm Pilot and subsequently Windows based PDA phones, it became the primary tool for my mobile communications needs. I don't really need much actually, just the odd calls. PDA made more sense as my mobile data is more important. Recently these changed as my current work requires more mobile talk time, data remains essential but communications moved up a notch. Hence the need for a tool that is more biased towards telephony.

I still keep my PDA thus looked out for something cheap, basic and durable that I can just shove in my jeans. The Motorola W220 fits the bill, a cheap no frills flip phone. The only extra is its built in radio tuner. The black facade in the front cover hides some lighted icons for calls, sms and battery status. These only came on when required to do so. Battery life is excellent. The only thing I did not get was speaker phone function, thus it became less than ideal for my purpose.

It was also at this time that the Razr v8 was launched. I wasn't too impressed but went to the shops nevertheless to check it out. Impressive specs, 500MB internal storage, speaker phones, blue tooth bla bla bla. Feels good in the hands. So I got it. Connected to the PC, it behaves just like a thumb drive - you need to tell it to do so - instead of syncing via software. Just drag and drop and it became an MP3 player. The only thing that I dislike about it is the fact that the shiny surface is a magnet for thumb prints. Oh, and also the fact that Motorola refuses to use the standard mini USB connector...

The W220 = RM 399.00 and I get a free Motorola Lanyard;
The Razr V8 = RM 1,699.00 and I get free protective screen for the front and internal screen.

Aprilia SC 200 - Running Cost

The bike was registered on 12 -03-2005 to replace my first scooter, the Modenas Elegan after I got my license (the oldest guy in a class of teenagers). It cost me RM 15,800.00 on the road plus an extra RM 450.00 for the preferred number plate.

Being an Italian costing twice as much as the Taiwanese Elegan, it of course out performs the lesser Elegan except in wind protection. A small price to pay for all the other better bits.

At current fuel prices, RM 12.00 will give me about 170km on my daily 40km commute mainly riding at its optimum speed. Insurance and road tax comes to about RM 300.00 on average. This will of course reduce over the years due to NCB.

1,000 km service;
Engine and gear oil, oil filter and fix a top box to increase cargo space = RM 430.00.

4,000 km service;
Engine and gear oil, oil filter = RM 105.50.

6,500 km service - funny exhaust sound;
Engine and gear oil, oil filter = RM 100.73.

12,000 km service;
Engine, gear and fork oil, oil filter, labour charges = RM 199.78.

16,000 km service - rear brake fluid leaking;
Engine and gear oil, oil filter, labour charges = RM 128.78.

18,000 km service - loss of power at higher speed;
Engine and gear oil, oil filter, spark plug = RM 124.78.

20,000 km service - accident repairs;
Engine oil, rear tyre and brake pads = RM 503.58.

All the above was done at Moto Milia in Bangsar. Great place, nice guys and good work. Their service and friendliness will make it difficult for me to switch brands. But, being practical some repairs had to be done at the local Ah Meng.

The cracked front screen is now bolted on. A whole new set will set me back more than RM 300.00. Bolted by Ah Meng at RM 4.00, (RM1.00 per screw).

The gaping hole where the Aprilia balancer used to be is filled with a green RM 16.00 balancer. Its more colorful but that's not the reason I put it in. I learned in mountain biking that gaping holes on handlebars can seriously carve a chunk of meat from your body, just like cookie cutter through dough.

The new rear tyre and brake pads replaced at Moto Milia. Tyre alone is RM 320.00. Comparatively, the ones on my Honda Jazz is only RM 118.00 per piece. Then again the tyre on my mountain bike is RM 98.00 each. Perspective, I suppose.

The cracked top box base as modified and strenghtened by Ah Meng. Saved me RM 350.00 from getting a new one. Total cost of repairs by Ah Meng RM 30.00, and I gave his boys an extra RM 10.00 for lunch as they really worked to help get these fixed ASAP.

Hopefully, these info would be useful to some of you who are considering biking instead of car-ing to work or wherever. And to those who reads my blog to make sure that I am really on MC after the accident, I am. I have friends whom I can rely on to send the bike for repairs, send me to clinic even buys and joins me for lunch at home. A little advice, learn to trust people so people could trust you too and maybe, just maybe you will make some friends who will always be willing to help you. Oh, don't forget to be sincere and try to always mean what you say. To the rest, sorry for this little ramble.

Bike Gear

Helmet Nolan N102 which saved half of my face, my eye, my cheeks and my chin. The VPS (tinted flip visor) is so well constructed that even though it looks flimsy did not break off. Only the ear piece cover came off and I lost it. The best feature of this helmet is its anti fog system, a second layer of clear visor which works well even in heavy downpour. Keeps my head safe, dry with good visuals and in comfort.

Bought in Singapore by a dear friend for SGD 280, about RM700.

The Spada padded jacket. Mangled at the shoulders saving a lot of skin and possible dislocation of my bones. Looks heavy and hot but is not. Its vented and wearable even in the hot humid Kuala Lumpur weather.

Bought in London for GBP100, about RM700.

The gloves without which I will not be able to type this entry as I am certain that without its protection, my intimacy with the tarmac will cause my hands to experience severe abrasive injury.
Bought in Singapore for SGD 29, about RM70.
The boots protects my feet from abrasion and crushing.
Bought in 1 Utama for RM140 during sale.

Finally the Tumi bag which protects my camera, PDA and errr cigarettes. The most important contribution of this piece of kit is that its totally waterproof. I've used other bags before which just could not take the rain that I endure in my daily commute. This one does.

Bought in StarHill for RM980.

All of them works. I have tried quite a few but I am sticking with these for the time being.

Aprilia SportCity 200

Picture off the brochure.

I initially wrote about my move from driving to riding to work on my other blog. This one will update that and report on the impression or long term test after doing more than 20,000 km on the saddle. However, instead of being a review this will be a post of an accident that I had this morning and how a lot of skin was saved by my full face helmet, gloves and padded jacket.

That's the mileage and the accident occurred about 15 minutes before the time shown on the clock. It happened at the junction of Jalan Tun Razak and Jalan Gurney. I was going through the junction with a dark blue Kelisa trailing behind me. Suddenly two foreign national ran across the road, I blared my horn and I can hear the Kelisa's screeching brakes. The first guy manage to get off the three lane road but the second guy did not, he stopped in his track and as the Kelisa and I got closer he tried to dash across which made me jam the brakes, lost control and got intimate with the tarmac. By the time I got up, I was unable to stand not to mention pick up my bike. All I saw is the second guy on the curb looking lost, perhaps in shock.

The Kelisa is gone by now, strangely, the first guy was nowhere to be seen. Most likely trying to get away from his stupid, illegal act of running across a three lane highway which caused the accident and might have killed me.

Aftermath of the accident. Thank you to the nice gentleman from across the road who righted my bike and parked it on the side. Also to the lady in white blouse and black pants who stopped and left her box of paper tissue.

The bent handle bar.

The scratched sides.

The Nolan N102 full face helmet that saved my face. Imagine if that scratch were to be on my skin instead of on the helmet.

My work pants and the abrasion marks.

My injured knee which is throbbing as I am typing this while waiting for the clinic to open.

The second idiot just stood up while I was bent over, looked at me and walked away. No apologies, no concerns for what had just happened, he just left. This is where I pulled out my camera and took his picture, did not manage to get his face as again, believe it or not, he dashed across the road while traffic is moving - did not wait for his light to go green. His friend, the first idiot is nowhere to be seen.
