The Wells of Eyes by Mat Salo is definitely one of the better short stories I have feasted my eyes on. Not just saying it because he is a dear friend but because it truly is. Middle aged male travellers will definitely have an easy task identifying with the main character - a travelling shoe salesman. Paunchy, balding, succumbing to his foibles while remain rooted to his reality.
So well expressed that I could feel his elation and subsequent pain. An excellent repartee to while away the long wait at terminals...
